Range used = lowest low to highest high across the guides; typical = average of the guides' midpoints. HomeAdvisor and Fixr do not split prices by height, so their material rate is used at every height; HomeGuide's height rows are used where it publishes them. How It Works

The calculator multiplies your fence length by an installed cost per linear foot for the type and height you pick, then adds gates and, if you tick it, removal of the old fence. Lengths entered in meters are converted at 1 ft = 0.3048 m.

The per-foot rates are transcribed from three public cost guides, HomeAdvisor, HomeGuide and Fixr, on 2026-09-14. For each row the low end is the lowest low the guides publish, the high end is the highest high, and the typical figure is the average of the three guides’ midpoints. HomeAdvisor and Fixr publish one range per material, so that range applies at every height; HomeGuide publishes separate rows for 6 and 8 ft privacy fences and for 4 ft versus 6 to 8 ft chain link, and those rows are used where they exist. Aluminum, wrought iron and split rail are priced as one range because none of the guides split them by height. The table under the calculator shows every number used.

Walk gates use HomeAdvisor’s $200–$600 and Fixr’s $50–$400 per gate installed. Driveway gates use Fixr’s $1,000–$6,000 and HomeGuide’s $2,000–$6,000 for an automatic aluminum driveway gate. Old fence removal uses HomeAdvisor’s $3–$5 and HomeGuide’s $10–$20 per linear foot, which is why that line has a wide range.

Posts and panels come from your post spacing: panels = length ÷ spacing rounded up, posts = panels + 1 for a straight run. The default 8 ft matches Bufftech’s installation guideline, which sets line posts for 8-ft vinyl panels at 96 in on center; the Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute allows chain-link line posts up to 10 ft on center. Corners, ends and gate posts add to the count.

Worked Example

A 150 ft wood privacy fence, 6 ft tall, with one walk gate. The 6 ft wood privacy rate is $10–$50 per linear foot across the guides with a typical of $25.83 (the average of $15, $37.50 and $25), so the fence alone is $1,500 low, ~$3,875 typical and $7,500 high. One walk gate adds $50–$600, typical ~$313. Total: ~$1,550 low, ~$4,188 typical, ~$8,100 high. At 8 ft post spacing that run needs 19 panels and 20 posts.

FAQ

Why is the low end so low?

HomeAdvisor’s fencing page still lists wood at $10–$20 per foot and chain link from $5, and those become the floor of the range. Treat the low figure as a bare-bones, easy-site price; the typical figure is closer to what quotes look like.

Does the estimate include permits, surveys or slope work?

No. HomeGuide lists chain-link permits at $40–$150+, a land survey at $300–$900, and adds $15–$20+ per foot of labor for steep or rocky sites. Add those if they apply to you.

How many posts do I really need?

The layout line assumes a straight run with no corners. Every corner and end adds a terminal post, and each gate needs two gate posts. Panel fences must keep the manufacturer’s post centers exactly or the panels will not fit, so follow the install guide for your product.

Are these prices for my area?

They are US national ranges. None of the three guides publishes a regional table, so there is no location input. Expect high-cost metro areas to land nearer the high end.

Where do the cost figures come from?

Every rate in the table links to the page it was taken from, with the access date. When a guide updates its numbers the table will lag until we re-check it.
