Chain Link That Lasts: Reading the Gauge and Coating Before You Buy

Chain link is the cheapest permanent fence you can buy, and the difference between a 10-year fence and a 30-year one is written in two specs almost nobody reads: wire gauge and coating class.

Gauge: smaller number, stronger wire

Residential rolls run 11½ gauge at the box store; commercial spec is 9 gauge. The half-step to 11 or 11½ saves pennies a foot and gives back sag, stretch, and dog-shaped bulges within a few seasons. For anything containing animals or children, 9 gauge is the honest floor; industrial and high-traffic runs go 6.

Coating class: the zinc is the fence

“Galvanized” spans a threefold range. Class 1 (~0.28 oz zinc/ft²) is the economy coat — fine in dry climates, rust freckles in humid ones inside a decade. Class 2 roughly doubles the zinc. Galvanized-after-weaving (GAW) seals the cut ends the weaving process exposes and outlasts galvanized-before-weaving (GBW) noticeably. Coastal or road-salt exposure: skip the argument and buy vinyl-coated over a galvanized core — the color is cosmetic, the second barrier isn’t.

• Materials only: $5–$12 per linear foot (4 ft residential, mid-spec)
• Installed: $12–$25/ft depending on height, gauge, gates, and terrain
• The quiet line items: corner and gate posts (heavier pipe, more concrete), top rail vs tension wire, and rock clauses for post holes

The install details that matter more than the brand

Posts set below frost line in concrete, crowned so water sheds; fabric stretched to a tension bar with a come-along, not by hand; ties every foot on rail, every post knuckle down. A perfectly specced fence hung loose is still a bad fence — tension is the whole trick of chain link.

Ask any quote two questions: what gauge, and what coating class. A contractor who answers instantly is bidding the fence; one who says “standard galvanized” is bidding the invoice.
