How to Choose the Right Posts for a Chain-Link Fence

A useful chain link fence post size chart must also account for each post’s job, nominal versus actual diameter, wall thickness, line-post spacing, fabric and screening, gate loads, wind exposure, soil, frost depth, and footing design.

The charts below are planning tools for ordinary residential and light-commercial work. They are not universal engineering tables, building-code requirements, or proof that a particular fence is structurally adequate. Use them to develop a material list, compare quotes, and identify the specifications that still need verification.

Quick-reference chain-link fence post size chart

These dimensions are typical trade-practice starting points, not mandatory sizes. The light-residential, standard-residential, and commercial tiers are drawn from Signet Fence’s retailer-authored framework guide. In its light-residential example, line posts use approximately .055-inch walls while terminal posts use approximately .065-inch walls; other products may differ. The two contractor examples come from Dominic Vella of Fantastic Fence. He recommends 1-7/8-inch line posts with 2-3/8-inch terminal posts for a standard 5- or 6-foot fence, and 2-3/8-inch line posts with 2-7/8-inch terminals as a starting point for an 8-foot or privacy-slatted fence. His guidance also warns that gates and site conditions can require larger posts, deeper holes, or more concrete, but it does not supply the wall specification or wind calculation needed for final approval. Two principles govern the chart:

  1. A diameter without a wall specification is incomplete. A larger thin-wall tube is not necessarily stronger than every smaller heavy-wall pipe.
  2. Gate posts cannot be selected from fence height alone. A light pedestrian gate and a wide, heavy double-swing gate impose very different loads. Gate width, weight, number of leaves, hinge arrangement, latch or operator hardware, frequency of operation, screening, wind exposure, and footing design all matter.

For an ordinary open-mesh backyard fence, the chart can narrow the shopping list. For a screened, tall, commercial, security, exposed, or large-gate installation, it should identify questions rather than end the design process.

Line posts, terminal posts, and gate posts do different jobs

Line posts are intermediate supports installed along straight fence runs. They keep the fabric aligned and support the top rail through loop caps. They normally carry less fabric-tension load than posts where a run begins, ends, or changes direction.

Terminal posts form the anchor category. The term covers end and corner posts and commonly includes gate posts. A pull post is an additional anchor where the layout, grade, or length of a fabric run requires the fabric to stop and be tensioned again.

These posts are not interchangeable merely because they share a coating or look similar. When chain-link fabric is stretched, its tension transfers to the posts at the ends of the run. A corner post must resist pulls from different directions. A gate post must carry gate weight and hardware forces in addition to any fabric tension attached to it.

Consider a rectangular enclosure with one gate:

  • Line posts divide each straight run into approximately equal bays.
  • A corner post is installed wherever the fence changes direction.
  • Two dedicated gate posts define the opening and support the hinges and latch hardware.
  • A pull post may be added where a long run, slope, or layout requires another tension point.

Ends, corners, gates, abrupt grade changes, and other pull points may require greater diameter, thicker walls, deeper embedment, larger footings, or a combination of those measures. The appropriate upgrade depends on the load and how that load transfers into the ground.

A terminal-post recommendation should not automatically be copied into the gate-post column of a quote. A terminal adequate at the end of an open-mesh run may be inadequate for a heavy gate. Conversely, specifying a large diameter without checking wall thickness, hinge compatibility, embedment, and footing design does not complete the gate specification.

Mark every post by role before choosing sizes. This simple step prevents a material list from treating a corner, pull, or gate location as an ordinary intermediate support.

Nominal post size versus actual outside diameter

Nominal size is a trade or product label. Outside diameter, abbreviated OD, is the physical distance straight across the outside of a round post through its center.

Those numbers are often different. A post sold as “2-inch” pipe may have an actual OD of approximately 1-7/8 or 1.900 inches. A listing that calls a post 1-7/8, 2-3/8, or 2-7/8 inches may instead be using a measured-style or actual-OD-style label.

The smaller labels require particular care. Some nominal-pipe charts map 1-3/8-inch nominal pipe to approximately 1.315 inches OD and 1-5/8-inch nominal pipe to approximately 1.660 inches OD. Other chain-link products use 1-3/8 and 1-5/8 inches as measured-style fence-tubing labels. Therefore, neither label alone establishes the post’s actual diameter.

Signet Fence’s published product information illustrates these differing conventions and also identifies 2-inch nominal tubing as approximately 1-7/8-inch OD and 2-1/2-inch nominal tubing as approximately 2-3/8-inch OD. Consult the selected product’s residential framework specification.

This is a translation guide, not a universal conversion table. Product lines may use nominal pipe size, measured OD, rounded fence-tubing labels, or inconsistent mixtures of those systems.

How to measure an existing post

For replacement fittings or an addition to an existing fence:

  1. Remove dirt, heavy coating buildup, or a cap that interferes with measurement.
  2. Measure straight across the outside of the post through its center.
  3. Use calipers when possible. A rigid ruler gives only a rough result and is easier to misread.
  4. Take a second measurement at a perpendicular angle in case the post is crushed or out of round.
  5. Record the result as measured OD, not nominal size.

Do not wrap a tape around the post and call that measurement its diameter. A wrapped measurement is circumference. Although circumference can be converted mathematically, direct OD measurement reduces labeling and calculation errors.

Wall thickness is harder to determine on an installed post. If an open end is accessible, calipers may be used to measure the material. Otherwise, identify the manufacturer and product line or obtain the specification from the supplier. Do not infer wall thickness from OD.

Match fittings to measured OD

Before ordering, verify the manufacturer’s stated fitting size and compatible post OD for:

  • Post caps and loop caps
  • Tension bands
  • Brace bands
  • Rail ends
  • Sleeves and couplings
  • Gate hinges
  • Post collars and adapters
  • Replacement posts intended for existing hardware

A “2-1/2-inch” band intended for a 2-3/8-inch-OD post is not necessarily compatible with hardware designed around a literal 2.500-inch OD. The product specification—not the rounded shopping-cart name—determines compatibility.

Wall thickness and pipe class matter as much as diameter

Outside diameter describes only one part of a post. Wall thickness describes how much material forms the tube. Steel properties, shape, manufacturing method, and coating can also matter, but the first practical step is to specify diameter and wall together.

A quote that says only “2-inch galvanized posts” is incomplete. It could describe lightweight residential tubing or substantially heavier pipe with a similar outside dimension.

The following classifications are planning categories from Signet Fence’s retailer guide, not universal strength ratings. SF20 and SF40 properties can vary by product and manufacturer. Compare the retailer’s framework classes and exact pipe data.

One residential product identifies its .065-inch-wall tube as 16 gauge. That is a specification for that product, not proof that every manufacturer’s “16-gauge” tubing has the same wall thickness. Gauge terminology may vary by material and commercial convention, while an exact decimal wall is easier to compare.

Prefer a quote written as:

2-3/8-inch actual OD × .154-inch wall

rather than:

2-1/2-inch heavy-duty post

The first description can be compared with a product data sheet. The second leaves both “2-1/2-inch” and “heavy duty” open to interpretation.

Why diameter alone can mislead

Increasing diameter can improve a tube’s resistance to bending, but wall thickness and material properties remain part of the result. A larger lightweight tube is not automatically stronger than every smaller heavy-wall pipe. Moving from one commercial framework label to another also does not prove that the complete fence, gate, or foundation is adequate.

Conditions that justify investigating heavier framework include:

  • Greater fence height
  • Heavier fabric or smaller mesh
  • Privacy slats or other inserts
  • Windscreens
  • Large or heavy gates
  • Commercial or security use
  • Exposed terrain
  • Greater design wind
  • Long fabric pulls or unusual grade changes
  • Hardware that creates concentrated or repeated loads

Do not assume that moving up one diameter or one framework class automatically resolves these conditions. Use the selected manufacturer’s dimensions and properties, and have the complete system assessed when loads exceed ordinary open-mesh residential practice.

Schedule 40 post dimensions and weights

Schedule 40 pipe should remain separate from lightweight residential tubing in a chain link fence post size chart. Similar nominal labels can conceal substantial differences in wall thickness and weight.

The following values apply to one Hoover Fence Schedule 40 chain-link framework product. The weights are approximate and should not be generalized to every product sold under a similar label. Hoover Fence represents this particular framework as meeting or exceeding ASTM F1083 and Federal Specification RR-F-191/3E, Class 1, Grade A; that statement does not establish compliance for other products. This table is a dimensional reference, not a recommendation that every residential fence use Schedule 40. It is useful when:

  • Comparing a precise specification with a vague “heavy-duty” quote
  • Checking whether a replacement post matches existing fittings
  • Evaluating possible heavy gate-post products
  • Confirming handling and transport weight
  • Distinguishing Schedule 40 from .055- or .065-inch residential tubing

Schedule 40 does not eliminate the need to size the foundation or evaluate the gate. Heavy pipe in an inadequate footing can still move, lean, or rotate. A properly founded post may also be the wrong diameter for the selected hinges or fittings.

Post spacing, privacy screening, and wind load

For ordinary chain-link runs, line posts are commonly placed 8 to 10 feet apart and generally no more than 10 feet apart. Spacing is measured from post centerline to post centerline.

Divide each run into equal bays instead of placing posts every 10 feet and leaving an awkward remainder. For example, a 31-foot centerline-to-centerline run can be divided into four intervals of approximately 7 feet 9 inches. See the industry educational guide’s equal-spacing example.

A practical layout method is:

  1. Establish the centerline of each terminal post.
  2. Measure the centerline-to-centerline distance for the straight run.
  3. Choose enough bays to keep every interval at or below the permitted maximum.
  4. Divide the run length by the number of bays.
  5. Mark each line-post center at the resulting equal interval.
  6. Repeat for every run between ends, corners, gates, or pull posts.

If only an inside-to-inside field measurement is available, convert it to a centerline measurement by accounting for the terminal-post radii before dividing the run. Do not divide an inside-edge measurement and treat the result as center-to-center spacing.

When closer spacing may be appropriate

Spacing of approximately 6 to 8 feet can be a preliminary adjustment for privacy slats, windscreens, thinner posts, heavier fabric, difficult terrain, or greater wind exposure. Chain Link Fittings specifically suggests considering 6- to 8-foot centers for privacy slats while noting that mesh weight, post strength, and terrain also affect the decision. Closer spacing can reduce the load assigned to each line post, but it does not automatically make an undersized post, wall, or footing adequate. Diameter, wall class, spacing, fabric, and foundations must be considered as one system.

Privacy material changes the load

Open chain-link fabric allows much of the air to pass through the mesh. Privacy slats and windscreens reduce the open area. They should therefore be treated as wind-load changes rather than merely cosmetic accessories.

If privacy material is planned now or may be added later, record:

  • Fence height
  • Approximate screened area
  • Type of slat or screen
  • Fabric gauge and mesh size
  • Applicable design wind conditions
  • Exposure to open fields, shorelines, ridges, or other unobstructed approaches
  • Post shape, material, OD, and wall
  • Proposed spacing
  • Soil and footing design
  • Gate area and whether the gate will also be screened

The Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute’s wind guide bases line-post selection on fence height, fabric gauge and mesh, post properties, wind speed, exposure, icing, soil, and footing design. Its referenced tables address basic wind speeds from 105 to 170 mph and fence heights from 3 to 20 feet, but the available extract does not include the post-dimension values required to reproduce a wind-rated matrix. CLFMI describes the document as general guidance rather than an industry standard and recommends assessment by a qualified professional engineer. Review the CLFMI wind-load guide and limitations.

Do not select a post from wind speed alone. Tall, screened, highly exposed, commercial, security, and special-wind-region fences warrant current local-code review and, where appropriate, professional engineering. Older ASCE-based guidance should not automatically be assumed to satisfy current local design requirements.

Post length, embedment, and footing size are separate decisions

Several dimensions are easy to confuse:

  • Finished fence height: The intended height of the completed fence.
  • Above-grade post height: The post portion remaining above finished ground.
  • Total post length: The full end-to-end length of the purchased post.
  • Embedment depth: How far the post extends below grade.
  • Hole depth: The excavation depth, which may not equal embedment in every installation detail.
  • Hole or footing diameter: The width of the excavation or concrete foundation.

A longer post provides more material for embedment, but buying one does not prove that the foundation is adequate. The post must still be set to the correct elevation, embedded appropriately, and supported by a footing suited to the soil and loads.

Common residential starting guidance

Residential retailer and contractor guidance commonly describes approximately 24 to 27 inches of embedment for line posts and 30 inches or more for terminal or gate posts. These are trade-practice starting ranges, not universal requirements. Fencing Direct recommends deeper settings for terminal posts because they carry fabric tension and gate or corner loads, while also emphasizing local frost depth and soil conditions. As a separate commercial product-selection example, Hoover Fence gives a typical 9-foot terminal post and 8-foot-6-inch line post for a 6-foot fence. Those lengths do not establish footing depth; frost, soil, installation requirements, and loads still govern the foundation.

General residential installation guidance sometimes begins with holes approximately 6 inches in diameter and 30 inches deep, or extending below the local frost line. Another rule of thumb is a hole approximately three times the post diameter. Neither is a structural calculation, and either may be overridden by soil, drainage, geography, post role, gate loads, height, wind, or manufacturer requirements. Hoover Fence’s installation manual provides these general dimensions and qualifications.

The CLFMI guide cites an ASTM F567 minimum footing-depth rule of 24 inches plus 3 inches for each foot of fence height above 4 feet. The same guide makes footing design dependent on local soil and installation conditions, so this formula is not a complete design for every fence. Consult the cited CLFMI footing discussion and limitations.

Gate-post holes are commonly larger and deeper than ordinary line-post holes because gates can impose concentrated weight, hinge reactions, impact, repeated operating loads, and wind forces. The required foundation cannot be chosen responsibly until the gate itself is defined.

Checks to complete before digging

Before excavating:

  1. Confirm property lines and applicable setbacks.
  2. Check permit, zoning, deed, and neighborhood restrictions.
  3. Determine the local frost depth.
  4. Identify soil, drainage, rock, fill, and slope conditions.
  5. Review footing requirements for the selected system.
  6. Confirm whether the project requires engineering.
  7. Contact 811 before digging so participating utility operators can mark buried facilities.

Hoover Fence’s installation manual specifically advises checking permits, restrictions, setbacks, and property lines and contacting 811 before excavation. These examples show how to use the chart without mistaking it for a guarantee.

Example 1: A 4-foot open-mesh backyard fence

Assume a basic residential enclosure with open mesh, no privacy slats, short straight runs, and a light pedestrian gate.

A reasonable first-pass material list is:

  • Approximately 1-5/8-inch line posts
  • Approximately 2-inch terminal posts
  • Approximately .055-inch line-post walls and .065-inch terminal-post walls in the cited light-residential framework example
  • Equal line-post bays ordinarily within an 8- to 10-foot range

Before ordering, verify:

  • Whether each label is nominal or measured OD
  • Exact wall thickness
  • Fabric gauge and mesh
  • Wind exposure
  • Soil and drainage
  • Local frost depth
  • Total post lengths
  • Footing dimensions
  • Gate width, weight, hinges, and post requirements

If the gate is unusually wide, heavy, frequently operated, or screened, do not assume that the 2-inch terminal-post starting point remains appropriate.

Depending on the seller’s notation, approximately the same outside-diameter families may appear as:

  • 2-3/8-inch measured-style terminal posts

These labels may refer to approximately the same outside diameters, but they do not establish equivalent wall thickness, steel properties, coating, strength, or suitability. Read the complete product specification instead of matching only the headline size.

Lay out equal bays no greater than the selected system permits. Identify gate posts separately. Confirm that caps, bands, rail ends, hinges, and sleeves fit the manufacturer’s stated or measured OD. Then verify embedment, frost, soil, footings, and wind before approving the material list.

Example 3: An 8-foot fence with privacy slats

Dominic Vella’s contractor guidance suggests the following preliminary dimensions for an 8-foot or privacy-slatted fence:

  • 2-3/8-inch line posts
  • 2-7/8-inch terminal posts

That is where the simple chart must stop. The same contractor guidance does not provide the wall thickness, wind calculation, or complete foundation design needed to approve those sizes. Review the attributed 8-foot and privacy-fence recommendation.

Before approval, check:

  • Exact wall thickness or framework class
  • Fabric gauge and mesh
  • Type and extent of screening
  • Approximately 6- to 8-foot spacing as a possible initial adjustment
  • Current design wind and exposure
  • Gate dimensions, weight, screening, and hardware
  • Soil and drainage
  • Post embedment
  • Footing diameter and depth
  • Local requirements
  • Manufacturer review or professional engineering

Moving up one diameter and reducing spacing do not, by themselves, establish a wind-rated design.
