Ask every supplier to state both the metallic-core diameter or gauge and the finished coated diameter or gauge. Do not infer one from the other.

Mesh, roll length, and selvage

The mesh measurement describes the chain-link diamond opening. Do not treat 2-inch and 2-1/4-inch mesh as interchangeable merely because both appear in residential product lines.

For its listed coated fabric, Signet Fence specifies knuckle-knuckle through 6-foot heights and knuckle-twist at 7 feet and above. That is a seller-specific product convention, not a universal industry rule. Specify the edge treatment required for the project’s design, safety, and access-control needs.

A copyable fabric specification

A precise request could read:

5-foot-high, 2-inch mesh, 11-gauge galvanized core, 8-gauge finished, ASTM F668 Class I as seller-specified, black, 50-foot roll, knuckle-knuckle selvage.

“As seller-specified” matters when the evidence is a storefront claim. If ASTM compliance is a contractual requirement, request the manufacturer’s current technical data sheet, product certificate, or lot-specific documentation rather than treating a product-page statement as independent certification.

Do not compare prices until the height, roll length, mesh, metallic-core measurement, finished measurement, coating class, color, selvage, and underlying metallic coating all match. If those measurement bases differ, the quotes are for different fabric.

Class 1, Class 2A, and Class 2B coating methods

The coating class describes more than color. It identifies how the polymer is applied and attached to the wire.

Do not choose a class merely because one label sounds more advanced. Consider:

  • Frequency of physical contact
  • Risk of scraping, vandalism, ball impact, or equipment contact

“Residential” and “commercial” are not colors. A black residential fence does not become commercial because it looks substantial, and a galvanized fence is not automatically lower grade.

Privacy slats change the structural question

Open chain-link mesh admits air and preserves visibility. Slats or screening reduce visibility, but the available supplier evidence supports treating the result as partial screening rather than the equivalent of an opaque solid vinyl panel.

The more consequential change is structural. Slats and screens reduce the open area through which wind can pass.

A light residential framework designed for open mesh may not be designed for that load. Do not assume slats can be added merely because they fit the mesh openings.
