Basic 4-foot galvanized chain link still has the lowest published starting price among the common professionally installed fences considered here. It remains a sound budget choice for long open runs, containment, airflow, and owners who do not want to stain a fence. The mistake is treating that starting price as proof that every chain-link proposal must beat pine.
Why The Old Cheapest-Fence Rule Made Sense
The received wisdom is not baseless. A March 2026 comparison places professionally installed 4- to 6-foot chain link at $15–$35 per linear foot and a basic 4-foot residential version at $15–$22. That conclusion has limits. The published ranges exclude gates, permits, old-fence removal, and unusual site conditions. They also do not cover every agricultural wire system, temporary barrier, poultry enclosure, or improvised DIY fence. Chain link is among the cheapest conventional permanent fences, not necessarily the cheapest barrier of any kind.

It applies the selected steel and lumber changes to the entire published installed ranges so that you can see the direction and possible size of the crossover. Labor, concrete, freight, inventory timing, and contractor margin will not necessarily move with a commodity index.
Steel And Lumber Moved In Opposite Directions

Those totals are arithmetic illustrations, not contractor quotes. Gates, permits, removal, grading, rock excavation, and unusual site work remain outside the cited headline ranges.
The key comparison is not chain link’s $15 floor against pine’s $38 ceiling. A mid-range galvanized proposal was already capable of matching a low-range pine proposal before the August steel peak. The 2026 divergence gives suppliers less room to preserve chain link’s traditional margin.
A separate May 2026 model illustrates how far a specified chain-link project can sit above the basic range. That model should not be blended with a basic four-foot price. It describes a taller, specified fence on a short run where setup and delivery are spread across fewer feet. It does show why “chain link” is not a sufficient bid specification.

Privacy Can Erase The Remaining Chain-Link Advantage
Bare chain link and pressure-treated pine privacy fencing do not perform the same function. When screening is mandatory, compare pine with privacy-equipped chain link rather than with open galvanized fabric.
Published chain-link slat allowances run about $4–$7 per foot, while one regional North Texas estimate gives $5–$8. A cautious planning range is therefore $4–$8 per foot, or $600–$1,200 over 150 feet.
Adding that allowance to the broad $15–$35 chain-link range produces an illustrative $19–$43 per foot. That overlaps and partly exceeds pressure-treated pine’s $18–$38 range.
The assembled $19–$43 figure is not a quoted market range. Slat labor, product type, opacity, and supplier pricing vary, and slats do not necessarily screen as completely as solid boards. A Chain-Link Quote Depends On More Than Fabric

Site access, roots, rock, finished landscaping, brush, and underground obstructions can overwhelm a small material-price advantage. Gates are especially easy to miss because they require separate frames, posts, hinges, latches, hardware, and installation labor.

Long rural and suburban runs remain chain link’s strongest case. For pet containment or a visible boundary where privacy is unnecessary, paying for a wood screen may solve a problem the owner does not have.
Galvanized chain link also avoids staining and painting. It can still require rust treatment, gate adjustment, retensioning, tie replacement, or repair of bent posts and damaged fabric. Wood may require cleaning, staining, painting, board replacement, and attention to deteriorating posts. Neither material has one reliable lifetime cost in every climate.
Chain link’s advantage is strongest when the proposal stays close to the basic specification: four feet tall, galvanized finish, light residential fabric, few gates, accessible soil, and a long uncomplicated run. The advantage narrows with greater height, thicker wire, coated framework, privacy slats, numerous terminal posts, and short projects subject to minimum crew charges.
Comparable Local Bids Set The Real Break-Even Point
The national figures establish that the ranges overlap; they do not identify the winner in a particular ZIP code. Contractor workload, local wages, freight, inventory, soil, access, permit requirements, and gate fabrication can move either proposal outside a published range.
Ask bidders to price the same measured length, finished height, fabric gauge, mesh, coating, framework grade, post spacing, hole dimensions, concrete method, gate count, removal, delivery, permits, taxes, and cleanup. Require every exclusion to appear in writing.
Quotes should also state how long the price remains valid and whether material pricing becomes fixed after acceptance. That matters when steel markets are volatile or a project may be delayed.
For a simple open boundary, basic galvanized chain link can still be the lowest valid bid.
