Choose an Aluminum Gate by Opening, Support and Frame Specs

Compare aluminum gate dimensions, post support, slope fit, frame specifications, advertised prices and warranty terms before ordering.

An open-picket aluminum gate can suit a residential boundary or walkway where you want an ornamental design. But “aluminum” alone does not specify the gate’s strength, fit or installed cost. Buy the gate, posts and hardware as a compatible system—not a panel that happens to match the fence color.

Start with its job. Open pickets do not provide privacy, and pet containment depends on the actual picket, side and bottom gaps. For a driveway, settle the required vehicle clearance and swing space before choosing a single or double gate.

Plan the posts and ground clearance first

For an existing opening, check that both posts are sound and plumb before measuring for a replacement. For a new opening, obtain the selected gate’s post and footing requirements before digging. Ask the supplier to identify:

  • Gate-post dimensions and wall thickness, distinct from ordinary line posts.
  • Required embedment or surface-mount base and anchors.
  • Footing requirements for the site and local frost conditions.
  • Any additional requirements for a wide gate, solid infill or an operator.

There is no universal aluminum-gate footing depth. For example, Williams’ aluminum fence instructions distinguish post embedment from a hole extending to the specified frost line, and provide separate mounting details for decks and concrete. Use the instructions for the actual system, not that example’s dimensions for another gate.

Verify property boundaries and local approvals before excavation. In the U.S., contact 811 before digging and follow your state’s notice and clearance procedures. Private pool and utility lines may need separate locating, as Ultralox’s installation guide cautions.

Also measure the ground throughout the gate’s full swing. A gate that clears the ground when closed may hit rising grade as it opens. Raising it to compensate also enlarges the bottom gap.

Do not assume a gate can follow a slope simply because the fence panels can. Aluminum Fences Direct says its welded gates cannot be racked during installation, although factory-racked versions are available at extra cost. Here, racking means changing the frame’s angle to follow grade. Resolve that geometry before ordering.

Separate opening width from actual gate width

A “4-foot gate” may describe the space between posts rather than a 48-inch-wide gate leaf.

Two documented examples show why the distinction matters:

Gate system Required inside opening Actual gate width
America’s Fence Store, 4-foot ornamental gate 48 inches 46.5 inches
Ultralox fence gate 48 inches 47 inches

These dimensions come from the retailer’s gate specification and Ultralox’s installation guide. They are not interchangeable hardware allowances. Ultralox also specifies 51-inch post centers when using its 3-inch posts.

Record the inside opening at the top, middle and bottom, then verify the prescribed hinge-side and latch-side gaps. Ask for the usable passage width with the gate fully open, especially if a mower or other equipment must pass through.

For paired leaves, include the center gap and ground-bolt arrangement. Our double swing gate planning checks cover the additional clearance and hardware decisions.

Compare the frame, not just the grade label

Ask for upright, rail and picket dimensions including wall thickness, plus the finished gate weight and maximum supported leaf width. “Residential” and “heavy-duty” labels are less useful than a dimensioned specification.

For example, the America’s Fence Store gate above lists 1-5/8-inch-square uprights with 0.125-inch walls, 1-inch-square rails with 0.062-inch walls, and 5/8-inch-square pickets with 0.045-inch walls. Those are specifications for that product, not minimums for every aluminum gate.

Check hinge and latch mounting against those profiles. Ultralox supplies self-tapping screws but recommends its included through-bolts for the specified posts and gate frame; it also identifies a hinge location needed for bolt access on its 54-inch open-midrail gates. Follow the exact mounting instructions rather than substituting fasteners by appearance. See our fence gate hinge fit guide for the measurements to collect.

If you want privacy infill or future automation, obtain written approval for that configuration before buying or modifying the gate.

Read prices as packages, not installed totals

Advertised U.S. prices checked October 3, 2026 illustrate two different purchase scopes:

  • $229.02 sale price: America’s Fence Store’s black, 4-foot-high gate for a 4-foot opening, with standard non-self-closing hinges and a latch, on its Kansas City local-store listing.
  • $591: Aluminum Fences Direct’s 48-inch-high residential double drive gates, without an arch, for an 8-foot opening in black or bronze. Its price table states that hinges and a gravity latch are standard, while posts are sold separately. White costs 10% more than the listed price.

Neither is an installed-cost estimate. Request separate amounts for posts, footings or anchors, hardware upgrades, delivery, tax, removal and installation. Keep custom slope work and automation separate so competing quotes cover the same work.

For pool access, standard included hardware may be unsuitable. CPSC guidance recommends pedestrian gates that open outward, away from the pool, and are self-closing and self-latching. Confirm the complete design—including gaps and latch placement—with the local code authority; the guidance itself is not mandatory law.

Check upkeep and the gate-specific warranty

Follow the gate manufacturer’s care instructions. As an example, a Home Depot-hosted aluminum fence care guide recommends rinsing dirt and fertilizer residue away, cleaning with mild dish soap and water, and rinsing before soap dries. It also recommends more frequent rinsing in coastal areas. Periodically check fasteners, alignment and latch engagement; lubricate hardware only as its manufacturer directs.

Finally, read the warranty section for swing gates, not just the fence headline. Jerith’s warranty, revised October 2023, gives swing gates one-year coverage for coating, material defects and workmanship, despite longer panel and post coverage. It excludes removal and installation reimbursement. Ask each supplier for the current gate-specific terms before accepting a “lifetime warranty” claim.
